Under the Winds Shadow
The landscape encountered by early European sealers and whalers was a rugged, untamed frontier, defined by a jagged coastline the wind never leaves alone. From these harsh conditions emerged generations of Maori and Pakeha children who grew into master navigators and skilled fishermen. Their existence was forged in the face of constant danger, fighting the elements, authority, and sometimes themselves as they struggled to make a living from the sea. These individuals stand among the southernmost mariners on the planet, with saltwater in their veins , their faces chiseled by the gale forced winds that sweep the seas below 45 South. Family histories are marked by courage, sacrifice, and tragedy yet they remain stoic in the face of danger. They find amusement in 'near misses' , relying on lessons passed down from father to son through the generations for their safe return. Only the most resilient perservered; their legacy is preserved and shared within the pages of this book.
This is the informal history of Southland commercial fishing from 1797 to 2024, told in the fishermens own words.
